Chasing Perfection On Feet With Cosmetic Surgery

Doctor: Choose Surgery To Change Foot Structure Selectively

POSTED: 3:35 p.m. EST December 8, 2003

While many people don't think of their feet as their best asset, others seek cosmetic foot surgery procedures.

In the 11 News Woman's Doctor report, Health Alert reporter Donna Hamilton described when women should -- and when they shouldn't -- pursue the procedure.

Peyton McCormick, 11, is recovering from foot surgery after having a toe that she really hated. The second toe on Peyton's left foot never grew and embarrassed her.

"People would tease me for it and it would hurt my feelings," she said.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mark Myerson of Baltimore's Mercy Medical Center specializes in feet and ankles and said foot surgery should be done very selectively.

"The problem is we have seen disastrous complications," Myerson said.

But Peyton's foot was having functional problems as well as cosmetic issues.

"The toes were curling in the groove in the bottom of the foot [and it] was only gonna get worse," Krisandra McCormick, Peyton's mother, said.

So they opted for surgery.

"I made a cut on the foot and put a small cage to lengthen the entire metatarsal," Myerson said.

"Her foot works so much better now the second toe is where it's supposed to be," Krisandra McCormick said.

And Peyton is thrilled to have a normal-looking toe -- she can wear flip flops now.

"Yes! I can [wear flip flops] without people bothering me and asking and stuff," Peyton said.
