LINTHICUM, Md. -- If you've been to Baltimore-Washington International Airport recently, you may have seen police officers mounted on scooterlike vehicles. It's the latest in new technology being tested by police at the airport, WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Jennifer Franciotti reported.Maryland Transportation Authority police officers are testing Segways. Two units are on loan from the Department of Justice as a way to help out with foot patrols both in the terminal and the garage.
The Segways have three speeds: slow, medium and fast, and each travels up to 12 mph.
Additionally, the Segways are a conversation piece as a law enforcement tool and good public relations for the department as kids stop by to take a look, Franciotti said. Each Segway costs $5,000 and while they're only being tested here, it's a proven tool in our nation's defense as they are currently in use by Navy SEALs.The command staff will gather officer reviews of the Segways before deciding whether to purchase them for the department.Stay with TheWBALChannel.com and WBAL-TV 11 News for the latest travel news updates.
