WASHINGTON --
There's a move on Capitol Hill to create a "Do Not E-Mail" list registry.
The registry would penalize marketers who constantly bombard computer users with "spam" or junk e-mail.
Sen. Charles Schumer of New York introduced the measure that would establish the national "Do Not E-Mail" list.
It would require the Federal Trade Commission to construct a system informing marketers of consumers' wishes.
Then, if companies sent messages to e-mail addresses listed on the national registry, they would face fines of up to $5,000 for each e-mail.
The penalties could be even stiffer for spammers who send unsolicited messages to minors, including pornographic e-mails.
What needs to be done about spam E-mails?
