As Maryland and the rest of the country face these most difficult economic times, the need for health and human services for vulnerable families has reached epidemic proportions. That's why giving to the United Way annual campaign is more important this year than ever. It is one way you know you are making a difference in the lives of those who cannot help themselves.By focusing on education, income production, health and safety, the United Way provides needed assistance to families in crisis and those struggling to survive day by day.
We all know that school readiness, helping students achieve their potential and providing basic human service needs for families, are integral to the well being of our community. As thousands of Marylanders have lost their jobs, due to no fault of their own, more families are finding themselves in need of food, clothing and shelter. As others reinvent themselves for the existing job market, they need assistance with day care and health care. With more than 5,000 high school drop outs across central Maryland last year, it is obvious that students need more attention.Families earning minimum wage must work multiple full-time jobs, just to afford a two-bedroom apartment at fair market rates in central Maryland. But its not just about money. Of course, donating to the campaign is the ultimate gift, but advocacy and volunteering are also necessary parts of the equation. So join the United Way of Central Maryland and Live United, Connecting People and Creating Strong Communities.
