Aug. 15, 2008: Olympic Glory
This past week of Olympic competition has exceeded all expectation as the nation and the world has turned its attention to Beijing in record numbers, marveling at the Opening Ceremonies and the remarkable performances of the athletes, led by Baltimore's own Michael Phelps. No matter how many gold medals Phelps ultimately wins, his performance in and out of the water this week has made his hometown and country proud. In fact, the entire Phelps' family, mom Debbie, and sisters Hillary and Whitney have given us all a week to remember.
Swimming teammate after teammate has commented on the support and unselfish approach Michael and his family have given them throughout these games. They have allowed us all inside the close knit American swimming community and to share their joys and sense of accomplishment. There is so much more to come from the games in Beijing in the days ahead. These Olympics may ultimately be remembered for Michael Phelps, but we hope it is also remembered for so much more. From the indescribable pageantry of the Opening Ceremonies to Jason Lesak's incredible comeback in the 4x100 freestyle relay, the performance of our men and women gymnastic teams to our own Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff.To them and all the athletes that have made this a summer to savor, we offer our thanks.
