A newborn baby was found abandoned outside a hospital on the eastern shore on Tuesday night.

The baby was found at the Memorial Hospital in Easton around 8 p.m. Police and hospital officials are very concerned about the mother, who likely needs medical attention.

A hospital worker went to a small shed outside the hospital for a break when saw a pile of blankets on the bench.

"When (the worker) first opened the door and saw this little bundle on the bench, she said, 'Dear Lord, let it be kittens'", Hospital spokeswoman Patti Wilson said. "Then this hand emerged from the bundle of blankets."

The hand belonged to a 6-pound, 15-ounce baby girl.

"She was warm, active, alert, apparently just hours old, healthy, good color," said Wilson.

Hospital officials believe the baby had only been in the shed 15 minutes before she was found. The baby is still in the hospital, but Social Services has custody of the child.

Police are now looking for the mother. "Clearly, the baby was just born and there is someone out there who needs medical attention," Wilson said.

The baby will remain in the hospital until doctors say it's okay for her to go. In the meantime, the staff has made sure the baby is well taken care of.

"They have named her Noel Christmas," said Wilson. "(They) started a fund for her to take with her when she leaves."

Easton police are asking anyone with information to give them a call at (410) 822-1111.
