Police Investigate Suspicious Odor At Supermarket

FOREST HILL, Md. -- Harford County emergency officials are investigating a suspicious odor at a Forest Hill supermarket.

A spokeswoman for the Harford County Sheriff's Department said officers were called to the Klein's Supermarket on Rock Spring Road near Route 23 after the store manager reported smelling an unusual odor.

Police said a man allegedly entered the store with a backpack and he was observed entering the supermarket's men's room. Once inside, police said the manager noticed a suspicious odor coming from the bathroom.

Police have detained the man and confiscated the backpack and its contents. State fire marshal officials determined that there was nothing dangerous in the backpack and contained personal items by the man.

Ginger Rigney, a spokeswoman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office, said one man has been taken into custody. She said he is currently charged with hindering an investigation and said the suspect is not cooperating with authorities.

The supermarket and a bank next door have been evacuated. Emergency medical crews are also on the scene, but there have been no reports of injuries.
