Beginning Jan. 1, 2004, certain pressure-treated wood will be banned.Pressure-treated wood can be found in some 50 million U.S. homes. Recent research found that kids who played on structures made from it have a higher risk of getting cancer, 11 News reported.Researchers said the cause is that much of the wood is treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA).
Eric Criss, a spokesman from the Consumer Products Safety Commission, talked about what to do if you already have things made from pressure-treated wood around your home."What we found is a relatively small risk. Essentially, you're looking at numbers between two and 100 per million that would face an increased risk over their lifetime," Criss said.Stock of pressure-treated wood will be available in stores until supplies run out.Stay with TheWBALChannel.com and WBAL-TV 11 News for the latest consumer news updates.
