WASHINGTON -- A change in turkey testing could lead to trouble this Thanksgiving.
A food-safety group said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's decision to do away with its program to test turkeys for salmonella is dangerous. The food-borne illness causes millions of people to get sick each year, and some cases end in death.
"Without government testing, turkey producers have less incentive to control dangerous hazards like salmonella and campylobacter, and consumers have less information on which to base their choices," Center for Science in the Public Interest spokeswoman Caroline Smith DeWaal said.Regardless of where you get your turkey, follow basic safety rules for thawing and handling. Cooking your bird thoroughly can also help protect against Salmonella.
