Researchers have documented how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can affect a young child's academic performance, but few studies shown its long-term effects.
Researchers have followed up on more than 100 young men with ADHD 10 years after their diagnosis. They found these men had higher rates of antisocial and addictive disorders, as well as mood and anxiety disorders.A similar five-year study in young women showed increased rates of depression, conduct disorder and bipolar disorder in those with ADHD.
Researchers feel these results show how important it is to detect ADHD early in order to prevent negative outcomes.
