Study: Certain Fish Acid Could Prevent Alzheimer's Disease

POSTED: 2:28 pm EDT September 13, 2005

Researchers have found the first evidence that Alzheimer's disease may be tied to some of the food we eat.

A medical study released Thursday indicates that people are more likely to develop Alzheimer's if their body lacks an essential fatty acid called DHA.

The study, in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, indicates that DHA suppresses the toxins in the brain that lead to Alzheimer's disease.

Dietary DHA is most common in cold-water ocean fish and in fish-oil capsules.

However, the study did not investigate whether the supplements themselves will protect against Alzheimer's disease.
