COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- An alcohol task force at the University of Maryland wants to put a ban on beer kegs.Banning the sale of kegs in liquor stores is the latest effort to clamp down on underage drinking on the College Park campus.
At College Inn Liquors, owner Sonny Lasick says banning the sale of kegs won't stop underage drinking. "Take away one thing and they'll get another," said Lasick. But the university's alcohol task force doesn't see it that way. Their proposal to outlaw kegs is intended to target customers older than 21 who load up on alcohol and then allow minors to drink it.Formed after the 2002 alcohol-related death of student Daniel Reardon, the Alcohol Task Force has been asked to come up with a university-wide alcohol policy. The keg ban proposal is just one idea.College Park junior Lauren Schecter says it's not a good one, "because it will push it to off campus houses -- where it is not as regulated as on campus."But some say if approved and if it's going to be effective, the keg ban would have to cover not only college park but the county as well.Turning this proposal into law will not be easy. The university can't keep stores from selling kegs, but it can petition the city, which then petitions the county, who then petitions the state to make it illegal in College Park.Stay with TheWBALChannel.com and 11 News for the latest education updates.
