Magnet Schools Application Deadline Looms

Time is running out for students hoping to attend Baltimore County's popular magnet schools.

Thursday is the last day to sign up, but school officials said students shouldn't wait until the last minute to apply.

Currently, there are close to 13,000 students in 29 Baltimore County magnet schools and their numbers are growing for next year.

At the Patapsco High School and Center for Creative Arts, students tuned up for class -- a class where competition is key and where programs are geared toward student interest.

"It gives you many more opportunities. Students have a lot more performing groups that they can choose from. They have a larger music faculty," said Gail Woods, a teacher at the school.

"Kids that are in each program are aware of the program that they participate in, yet students in both programs are able to participate and take electives offered by the same teachers," said Principal Ed Mitzer.

Anthony and William Spinnato have been enrolled in the county's magnet programs since middle school.

"The experience -- I just couldn't pass up going to another magnet school. I just wanted it so much," Anthony said.

"If you go to another school, you could really be into music, but you're just there for a regular school experience," William said.

School officials said that's why students should choose a magnet program and sign up early.

"We do urge parents to send the applications, if they can, by certified mail so that we have a record it has arrived," said Phyllis Bailey of the Baltimore County School District.

Even then, student names may be added to a waiting list, officials said.

The deadline to sign up for Baltimore County magnet schools is this Thursday, Nov. 30.
